have one with the original holster supposedly from 1876 is a single six shot us army officer gun. It has all the original scars wear and tear. I was told not to clean it that takes away from value. It has an I think a bird with the wings up I think it has an s on it I don't really know but I'm interested in selling it once I get it appraised by a guns man.

If that piece really goes all the way back to 1876 and still has the original holster, you’ve got a remarkable slice of military history right in your hands! I’d stick to just giving it a light dusting for cleaning. Those little scrapes, the patina, and all the markings are part of what makes it special. Collectors really appreciate that authenticity, so over-cleaning or trying to restore it might actually take away from its character and that could hurt its value.

Just oil it with 20Wt. synthetic, it stays on the metal for literally years if you don't handle it much. it won't turn into shellac like WD or the cheap oils. in fact, I don't think it EVER dries out. Shellac has to be removed to see the markings clearly, and all that buffing will eventually remove important marks.
