Tips for My First AR-15 Build

Been mulling over building my first AR-15 for a while now. Finally dove in and started checking out parts. Honestly, it seems like there are some decent deals if you dig a little, but I'm still figuring out what's actually worth it.

I'm thinking a basic rifle build to kick things off. Planning on sticking with 5.56 for now, but I'm open to other ideas if you think I should go a different route.

Are there specific brands you recommend avoiding? I want to make sure I'm not wasting money on junk. Also, any hidden costs I should keep an eye out for? I've heard about some common rookie mistakes I could easily fall into. Or am I better off just buying a factory-built one instead?

I'd really appreciate any advice or just some stuff you learned the hard way when you were starting out. Thanks!

Stay away from the Poverty Ponies (Colt), I'm just kidding. There are some great brands out there, and you don't need to spend a fortune on them.

I built a fairly nice one out of a 125$ Anderson, milspec parts, and a Bushmaster match CAR upper.
I think I had 500$ in it when all was done, but I'm counting the scope and mount.

Invest in a decent set of pin punches, a small composite hammer and hand files. Most pieces fit relatively fine, but sometimes they need a little finesse to go. I have just finished my third one, and I have enjoyed each one but have had to work something on each. One thing I have found to be a pain in the butt is the spring on the dust cover. For some reason, that darn thing doesn't play nice for me, lol
