I've been pairing things up for most of my life; I even used to get paid for it before Y2K.
IDK about anyone else's age or physical condition, this is my kit, I can recommend all kinds
of alternatives if you like, but this kit is based around a guy who is pretty much falling apart,
in mediocre health and has trouble walking.
PSA (Palmetto State Arms) entry-level AR-10 /W/ Stainless barrel and Nickel boron-coated internals.
Use whatever sights/scopes you like, I chose flip-up rear sights and an ACOG. Have at least 7 magazines.

A Glock in 9MM. Nothing fancy, it just works and works well, and you probably won't cry much if you lose it.
again, get at least 7 magazines.

Mossberg 590. Get the model with the collapsible AR-style stock and a heat shield. You can also mount a scope/hologram/dot sight.

Ruger 10/22 lightweight stock version. Invest in some Ruger factory 25-round magazines and a scope.

Round it off with a USMC K-bar or American-made pilot survival knife.

This kit is vastly different from the kit I had a few years back, I didn't mind the extra weight, and mags and spare parts were cheaper then.
FN-FAL, Remington 870, Browning Hi Power, 10/22, Buck Hunter.

The "GOOD" Kit (Get out of Dodge.)
Mini-14, 7 mags,10/22, 7 mags, Remington 870, 1911 45 ACP.
More to come!

Magnus, good choices there. Not knocking them at all, but, I think I would downsize the AR to an AR15 for weight saving. You can find/salvage .223/5.56 in multitudes almost anywhere. As for the Ruger, I would get the breakdown one so it could be packed away in whatever ruck you are going to use. A Glock is a good choice, go with a G19 with the 17 round mags. Not too much but enough. The 590 is a solid choice.

Oh, I have whole lists of alternates, including swapping off the 10/22 for an AR-15 with a 22 converter kit, but I'm trying to get the most utility out of it for where I am, 5 miles over the hill, and it might just be a shotgun and pistol or say nearer to the river, upgrade the pistol to a 44 magnum for that "Imaginary" black bear. I'm kind of itching to try one of the new AOW 12-gauge shorties, but a disability check only goes so far. LOL
